What's in season in August?

Holiday time. After a long day in the sunshine at the beach or the park, the last thing you want to do is slave over a hot stove. Combine lightly steamed broad and runner beans with red onion and feta and a herby dressing and serve with warm flatbread.

Sun ripened apricots will be delicious just as they are or bake them into a moist cake, adding pine nuts for extra texture and flavour.

Also in season: sorrel, fennel, broccoli and greengages

Runner beans

· The runner bean is native to Central America where it has been cultivated for more than 2000 years and there is archaeological evidence of its existence much earlier than that.

·Runner beans were brought to the British Isles in the seventeenth century by John Tradescant (gardener to King Charles I) and were grown as a decorative plant before being used as a food in Britain.
